How to Prepare for a Studio Pet Portrait Experience in Wilmington

Updated: Aug 11

Studio sessions are a great way to capture clean, timeless portraits of your pet. Whether you’re booking a session to celebrate a milestone, document your pet’s personality, or get in the frame together, a little preparation can help set the stage for a successful Wilmington pet photography experience.

The Week Before Your Session

If you're coming with your dog and they need grooming, schedule it for a few days before your session. This is especially important for doodle breeds and other dogs with longer coats. Thick eyebrows can cast shadows over their eyes, and longer hair over the snout can block their expression in portraits. A quick trim can make a huge difference in how well we can see your dog’s face.

*Please also ensure their nails have been trimmed to avoid accidental scratches

The Day Before Your Session

Stick to your pet’s normal routine. A bath isn’t required for dogs, but if you want them looking extra shiny, this is a great time to fit one in. Some dogs benefit from a bit of exercise the day before to take the edge off any excess energy.

The Day Of Your Session

Feel free to exercise your pet in the morning, but avoid a big walk right before your session. Dogs or cats who arrive panting may need a little extra time to cool off before we start. If your pet tends to get anxious in the car, you're welcome to arrive a bit early to give them time to settle in. For dogs, a short walk around the block can help them shake off any nerves and feel more relaxed when they arrive.

What to Bring

  • Treats: For dogs, we have beef liver treats and peanut butter in the studio. For cats, we have Churu sticks and cat nip. If your pet has any dietary restrictions, feel free to bring your own treats.

  • Leash/Pet Carrier: You’ll need one to walk them from the car into the studio.

  • Toys: Their favorite toy can help us get their attention and may be something you want included in the photos.

  • Props: If you have any special items you want photographed with your pet, bring them along. We also have a small selection of props in the studio. We’ll talk more about your preferences during the pre-session consult.

  • Clothing: If you’re planning to be in the photos, check out our blog on what to wear for your pet photography session.

What Not to Worry About

Don’t stress about your pet’s energy level or obedience training. I’ve photographed dogs of all temperaments, from shy kitties to rowdy puppies. Whether your pet is calm, anxious, energetic, or a little of everything, I’ll adjust the session to suit their needs.

Session Location and Parking Info

The Photo District studio is located at 516 Princess Street in downtown Wilmington. Our studio entrance is at the back of the building, not the main front door (which belongs to another business). We offer private parking in the lot behind the building. You can park in any space marked “Fresh Start Family Law.”
