Planning a pet photo session and not sure where to go? Wilmington is full of beautiful, dog-friendly locations that make for unforgettable backdrops. Whether your pup loves the beach, prefers a quiet trail, or is most relaxed at home, we will find a spot that is one of the best dog-friendly photo locations in Wilmington and suits their personality.

Here are my go-to locations for pet photos in and around Wilmington:

  1. Fort Fisher State Recreation Area: One of my favorite spots, Fort Fisher offers a mix of scenic beach and quiet park settings, making it perfect for both peaceful portraits and playful action shots. It works beautifully at sunrise and sunset, with soft light and minimal crowds. There is room to explore without overwhelming your pup, and the variety of backgrounds gives your final gallery extra depth.

  2. Carolina Beach State Park: Tucked away just off the main road, Carolina Beach State Park features hidden beaches and peaceful trails that are great for dogs who love to splash or sniff. It is best for sunset sessions, when the sun dips behind the water and creates warm, glowing light. This location is ideal for more adventurous dogs who enjoy a bit of everything: water, woods, and wide-open space.

  3. Greenfield Lake: If your dog is not a fan of sand or crowds, Greenfield Lake is a great option. Located near downtown Wilmington, it offers quiet, tree-lined paths, Spanish moss, and plenty of shade. It is best for sunset sessions and works especially well for older or more sensitive dogs who just want a peaceful stroll and some one-on-one time.

  4. Wrightsville Beach (October–March Only)Wrightsville is one of Wilmington’s most iconic beaches, and it is open to dogs only during the off-season, October 1 through March 31. If your session falls in that window, it is a beautiful place for a coastal shoot at either sunrise or sunset. The wide beaches and soft light create the perfect setting for photos.

  1. Topsail Island: Just a short drive from Wilmington, Topsail Island is ideal if you are looking for something a little more low-key. It is great for sunrise or sunset and has long stretches of beach with fewer crowds. During the off-season, dogs are allowed off-leash, which can be perfect for capturing joy-in-motion photos. It is especially good for high-energy pups or those who need room to roam.

  1. Your Home: Sometimes the best place for a session is the one your dog knows best. At-home sessions can be cozy, relaxed, and full of personality. Whether we are in your backyard, living room, or favorite neighborhood walk, shooting at home allows your dog to feel totally at ease, and those little moments of comfort often turn into the most meaningful photos.

If you are planning a pet photo session in Wilmington and are not sure where to go, I am always happy to help you choose a location based on your dog’s vibe. From the beach to the backyard, we will find the perfect place to tell your story.
